Harnessing the growth in Mountain Biking over the last 40 years, the Whakatane Mountain Bike Club (WMBC) has been formed to offer riders of all ages and ability the opportunity to enjoy and develop riding skills in purpose built facilities within the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The club has a strong focus towards recreational riding and enjoying social interaction and as part of the club calendar, rides are organized to outlying regions to experience a range of MTB experiences. The club also runs the Ohope Ordeal MTB event in conjunction with the Ohope Beach School.
Just 10 minutes East of Whakatane on the East Coast of the North Island, one of New Zealand's newest Mountain Bike jewels is located. Set amongst 470ha of the privately owned, productive working forests, Asset & Rawhiti Forest, is the Whakatane Mountain Bike Club’s purpose built area. Extensive track building has been underway with the park officially opened on the 19th August 2006. Track building continues and it is hoped that tens of kilometers will eventually be completed for the benefit of club members - See the news page for the latest details.
